Working from left to right since I'm right-handed I've started to fill in the back ground . The concept of this piece is to try to demonstrate the way that these beautiful animals can blend into their surroundings, however as hard as they try sometimes they just can't hide, primarily due to their sheer size.
Bull Moose can weigh up to 750 kgs or roughly 1500 lbs and their antlers can span 5 to 6 feet across. Moose are also extremely active foragers since a full grown adult needs to consume approximately 9500 calories per day to maintain it's weight.

I take it from the "Step two" title that this one wasn't quite finished at post time, but it's looking good already. You are confronting head-on what I consider to be perhaps the greatest technical challenge of working in pencil: portraying white branches and foliage against dark surfaces, i,e., the tree trunks and the bull himself. I always like a good forest scene, with no "cutting corners", and it looks like this one will have some interesting lighting-work too. If you don't mind a technical question, I am curious to know: what paper are you working on? Smooth? Vellum-surface? (I'm a real "media enthusiast".):)
ReplyDeleteHi Tim,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment - this piece isn't finished yet - as you say I'm trying not to cut corners and take my time with the trees.
I'm using an Arches 140 lb smooth paper but it does have some tooth to it. I'll keep the blog update with the pieces progress.
It sounds like your an artist as well - I'd like to see some of your work.
Stuart
I can see why you would prefer the smooth to the cold press; more crisp lines that way.
ReplyDeleteI have a few samples on my website: http://www.tamzart.com/. I hope to upload more wildlife images at some point. Most of the artwork currently in the gallery is pet portraits, but it's a work in progress; we launched the site fairly recently.
Hi Tim,
ReplyDeleteSorry for the delay - I was away from the studio - your work is very nice! If I have any requests from potential clients for pet portraits I'll send them your way.
